Guests

1997

Guests is a work signed by the couple Fortuyn / O’Brien (Irene Fortuyn and the prematurely deceased Robert O’Brien). It is located in Ghizzano, a hamlet of Peccioli, and it consists of two stone benches characterized by very pure lines. The work of the artist recurringly features marble and seats and he chooses to place it on the facade of the Oratory of Santissima Annunziata. Guests consists of two sculptures, identical to one other, in gray Carrara marble. Each one is made up of a base element, whose shape resembles a bench, and five identical regular cylinders, placed on top. The artist's interest was driven by the location of the building, at the very entrance to the town, and determined the final choice of location for the work. Furthermore, the small church has a religious and devotional value, perfect for the exchange that Fortuyn wanted to convey. Simple and essential elements, volumetric shapes and pure lines, respect for the sense of symmetry and an elegant profile recall the architectural simplicity of the façade. The work becomes the emblem of a mystical sensitivity, communicating a stillness with a sacred flavour. Although the shapes resemble two benches, they are two occupied, full and inhospitable seats and they are not really made for sitting on; they are an indifferent response to the needs of passers-by.
