Federico De Leonardis

Cane

1996

Cane by Federico De Leonardis depicts a walking stick carved in red bricks. In essence, the design takes on an absolute value and refers to a many-sided world of values and habits. The stick is the typical support of the elderly while walking and the scratch in the wall seems to immortalise this essential companion, as it recreates multiple walks along the same street in our imagination. De Leonardis's work summarises a sort of "way of life" characterised by this incessant habit typical of mankind. This groove envelopes the idea of the act of walking, crystallizing it forever. It immobilises the action of walking while it is endlessly reiterated. Furthermore, Cane assumes a strong social value, almost a cooperative one: being on a wall of a private house, yet exposed to the public, it is available to anybody: "a silent but comforting presence, in case of need".
