Acropolis

1993

Vittorio Messina creates two other projects in Peccioli: Acropolis (1993) and Fountain (1994). They are closely related both in function, and in meaning and especially for the place where the works were created. Both define the highest point of the inhabited settlement, the ancient seat of the castle of Peccioli (hence the name Castellacccia), now destroyed, accessible through a staircase. Placed here is Acropolis, a work consisting of six architectural elements, all identical to one other, arranged in a circle. Six columns with a square base, covered by Carrara marble slabs, topped by horizontally placed wooden beams. On each beam, both internally and externally, the phrase “iltempodellaformalaformadeltempo” was engraved, a reference to an archetype of the classical age. The name of the work, from the Greek Ákros (high) + pólis (city), indicates a fortified city of ancient Greece but also a place of worship. In Peccioli, the elevated position and the ancient destination of the hilltop are shared with them. Today the wooden parts are no longer present, but you can still see the linchpins that fixed such elements together. The wooden entablature created a broken and discontinuous line which, depending on the point of view, was supposed to inscribe or circumscribe a polygon in the perimeter of the Temple. The intention of the artist was to give a plastic representation of their endurance over time till the end of the rope by contrasting a durable material, marble, with an easily perishable material, wood. This contrast creates a subtle allegory of the struggle between life and death. At a later time, Messina modified the work by building a sort of central cell of tufa blocks, a material capable of retaining water and of changing over time.
