I PROGETTI:

Vittorio Messina

Untitled

1991

A stele, a monolithic element, more than five meters high, in solid bricks arranged according to the traditional "Opus lateritium", featuring a rectangular "window”, whose base is almost as wide as the section, topped by a front in a lintel structure. In the upper part, the slab is crossed by three parallel horizontal bands, in white marble, where an inscription in verses unfolds uninterruptedly “Chi trasporterà o valorosi sul far della sera il morto o la luna dall’altra riva del fiume” (Who will carry the dead or the moon to the other side of the river as the evening comes, oh corageous ones). It stands isolated, in a style fusing perfectly with the surrounding architecture; you can recognize the trait of a measured and careful hand. The panoramic terrace where it is located allows a view of the hills below. The walls around it are the enclosure of a house that has never been completed. Its position forces the observer to make a circular movement in order to observe the stele in its entirety. The window that Messina creates at the top of the structure looks like a "living painting", changing as the light changes. It is a reference to the ancient Albertinian dictates of painting as a "window onto the world". The work invites its interlocutor to take a break: stopping, observing, meditating, keeping quiet and listening are fundamental actions in life, so with this "wall" the artist wants to create an opportunity to savour a moment. The phrase engraved on Carrara marble alludes to all those existential doubts that humans believe they are the custodians of.

"The emphatic line of the horizon expresses the idea of stillness; a stillness Vittorio Messina's work opens to and talks to, offering the passer-by a place to stop at, the fictitious grandeur of the sky and fragments of nature, so it is not clear where the work is and is not. It stands as a plane, a diaphragm that alludes to a potential space. It is an appearance that gives the property of a form to things without a name and that gives a language to the landscape, so that it can give account of its shadows".
