Peccioli Constructive

On 21 July 2001, a few months after the inauguration ceremony for the new Carabinieri barracks in
town, the sculpture entitled Peccioli Constructive was unveiled, a work by Nicola Carrino, an artist
born in Taranto in 1932. From the early 1960s, he has been an advocate of Minimalism, from
which he has taken the essential, pure, strongly architectural lines. The sculpture is made of steel
and consists of two faces, three meters high and one and a half wide, assembled by welding.
Carrino's work does not originate independently of social situations, but within them, after a careful
study of the region. Speaking of this sculpture, during the inauguration, he stated that the vertical
work rises upwards albeit linked to the earth, through a constant, monitoring process, just like that
of the Carabinieri. The interpretation of his works remains individual: sculptures, parts of a more
articulated architecture, totem signs. In the works of the 1960s, the artist was explicitly interested in
provoking the observer, in order to persuade them to interact with the work. This entails an active
position on the part of the observer, who does not participate unintentionally in the game conceived
by the artist: on the contrary the observer, along with the game and with the environment, gives
meaning to the work. Sculpture as means and no longer as end.
